Florida Amateur Radio works to foster the next generation of amateur radio operators by providing practical, hands-on experience with STEM subjects through mentorship, experimentation, programming and building amateur radio equipment. Our new club members are taught basic electronic theory and help prepare them for their FCC amateur radio license test(s). Our experienced members foster an atmosphere that promotes good citizenship within the amateur radio community, community service and a willingness to learn and teach.
FAR is changing the way amateur radio organizations operate. Our first goal is to have one hundred active members in one year, with the focus on our college and high school students and teachers, as well as our friends and neighbors in our community. With that in mind, our bi-monthly meetings start with getting members on the air as soon as they walk in the door. (Unlicensed members can sit with a licensed control station operator and still get on the air! We've got you covered!) After getting on the air for a short time, our meetings are called to order to discuss FAR business. We then move right in to our hands-on project for the group (first meeting of the month) or equipment setup, radio programming/use, etc. (second meeting of the month). There is always an opportunity to learn something new and use your hands at our meetings!
Part of our membership building happens through POTA (Parks On The Air) activations. These activations are done in state parks anywhere we can get to! We invite the curious to sit and listen as we make QSO's (contacts) around the country - and many times around the world. Occasionally we'll have a secondary station setup on a local repeater as a GOTA (Get on the air) station and let the curious visitors talk to our other members on the radio! It's a great opportunity to get visitors involved on the spot!
FAR is always looking for volunteers to help us make our vision a reality. We'll help you find a way to volunteer that best suit you.
Get started today!
Our volunteers will be knowledgeable in specific areas, have criminal and security background checks and a willingness to help! And don't worry if you're not sure where to help. We will meet with you to determine your areas of interest and, if needed, get you trained up for to be the best!
Your tax-deductible support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and fund our missions. Your donations will help us with teaching supplies, purchasing new equipment, establishing high school and college amateur radio clubs on school campuses and more!
